Almost 150 potential healthcare workers of the future were welcomed by Frimley Health recently for an insight into life working in a busy NHS hospital.
Students from local schools and colleges registered for the Trust’s annual ‘A Taste of Frimley’ and ‘A Taste of Wexham’ events, held at Frimley Park Hospital and Wexham Park Hospital.
They were welcomed by senior staff before frontline medics and other specialists talked to them about their various roles.
The students, all aged between 16 and 18, learned about studying to become a doctor or a nurse or for roles in midwifery, theatres, physiotherapy, hospital laboratories or pharmacy.
Some also visited the hospitals’ simulation suites where medics rehearse techniques in a safe, simulated environment.
It was the 11th successive year that the event has been held at Frimley Park, and participating schools and colleges included Salesian, Collingwood and The Sixth Form colleges in Farnborough, as well as Farnborough College of Technology and Farnborough Hill. Also talking part were Yateley Sixth Form College and St Nicholas’ School in Fleet.
The ‘A Taste of Wexham’ evenings started in 2017 and this year participating schools included Windsor Girls’ and Windsor Boys’, Salesian School in Chertsey, St Joseph’s Catholic High School and Newlands Girls’ School in Slough, Furze Platt Senior School in Maidenhead and The Langley Academy.
Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust membership manager Sarah Waldron, one of the organisers of the events, said: "We were delighted to once again welcome so many students who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.
"These popular events continue to go from strength to strength and we are always struck by the passion and enthusiasm of the young people involved.
"We know of visitors to some of our previous ‘A Taste of…’ evenings have been inspired to study for medical careers, and many choose to become members of our foundation trust and become more involved in our hospitals."
The Trust is already making plans to repeat the events in 2019.
