Professional background
Professor Gardiner is a consultant plastic, reconstructive surgeon. He takes a holistic approach to patient care and will take the time needed to understand your problem and provide evidence-based treatment options. His main subspecialty is hand and wrist surgery but I also provide skin cancer operations and general plastic surgery care including managing wounds and emergencies.
Matthew maximises non-surgical treatments. If surgery is recommended, he promotes patient safety and minimises down time. For instance, most hand surgery is offered under local anaesthetic (wide awake local anaesthetic no tourniquet, WALANT surgery). He has designed a table that enables patients to sit up whilst having hand surgery.
He completed his medical training at the University of Cambridge and University of Oxford before completing a PhD at Imperial College London. Professor Gardiner's plastic surgery training was on the London rotation before undertaking fellowships in hand surgery, extremity reconstruction and aesthetic surgery.
Research interests
Prof Gardiner is associate medical director for research and innovation at Frimley Health and holds academic positions at the University of Oxford and University of Surrey. His main research interests are hand osteoarthritis and surgical randomised controlled trials.
