Our emergency departments at Frimley Park and Wexham Park hospitals are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. All emergency services are provided from major trauma care to the treatment of injuries and serious illness.
Think before you visit - Know where to go when you're feeling unwell
For illnesses that are not life-threatening you should first contact your GP surgery. Outside of normal surgery hours you can still phone your GP, but you will usually be directed to an out-of-hours service. The out-of-hours period is from 6.30pm to 8am on weekdays, and all day at weekends and on bank holidays.
Less severe injuries can be treated in our Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) and at urgent care centres or NHS walk-in centres, which can treat patients with less serious ailments without an appointment.
You can also call NHS 111 if you need medical advice or to tell you which is the best local service to offer you the care you need. Find out more about alternatives to the ED and local services.
If you need an ambulance, please call 999.
About our emergency departments
Our emergency departments have resuscitation units (the unit at Frimley Park is believed to be the largest of its kind in Europe), designated paediatric units and a minor injuries unit at Frimley Park, which offers assessment and treatment for minor injuries such as sprains and strains. We also have a clinical decision unit for patients needing a few hours of acute treatment but who do not need to be admitted to hospital.
Both Frimley Park and Wexham Park hospitals are accessible by the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance service.
There is also an acute treatment service for stroke patients and our cardiology service can provide 24-hour specialist intervention for heart attacks.
After your arrival at the emergency department, please register at the reception desk, and then a doctor or nurse will assess your condition and decide on the next best course of action. This is called triage, and will ensure that people with the most serious conditions are seen first.
The emergency department is linked to every other department in our hospitals, and we can offer all emergency diagnostics, medical and surgical assessment, and urgent treatments.
