If you have been referred to us as a symptomatic patient, because you have noticed changes in your breast or breasts, you will be offered an appointment at either Frimley Park Hospital or The Parapet.

If you are invited for breast screening as part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme, then you will be offered an appointment at The Parapet or one of our mobile screening sites.

Breast imaging is performed using ultrasound and/or x-rays. Mammography (x-rays of the breasts) is a specialised imaging procedure using low-dose x-rays to create detailed images of the breast tissue. This can detect changes in your breasts before you or your doctor can notice them. The NHS Breast Screening Programme is an initiative dedicated to the early detection of breast cancer in women across the United Kingdom. Further information is available on our Breast Screening Service page.

If you are having a mammogram, this will be performed by a mammographer (a radiographer specially trained in breast Imaging). If you are having a breast ultrasound, this will be performed either by a radiologist or an advanced practice radiographer who specialises in breast imaging.

The breast imaging team perform a variety of procedures. You should be advised when you are offered an appointment, what procedure you are being booked for.

Please access the relevant information leaflet below for specific information on how to prepare, what to expect, any associated risks and aftercare.

If an area of concern is identified in your imaging, you will be offered further investigation. Some patients may need specialist mammographic views, or a biopsy to take a small sample of tissue for analysis by a pathologist. If this is needed it will be discussed with you during your appointment.

The mammographer or radiologist will be available to answer any questions you may have, and you will be provided information about the procedure and any related risks or aftercare, so you can make an informed decision about your care.
