Every day matters
Every day matters to our patients. That’s why we chose that name for our work to reduce delays to discharge and to help patients get home as soon.
This will:
- Improve the quality of care and experience of our patients
- Reduce waiting times and avoid patients’ treatment being cancelled
- Reduce pressure on staffing and improve the working life of our teams
- Free up beds and reduce the use of inappropriate and costly escalation areas
- Ensure patients are in the best place for their care and enable our clinical areas and teams to work in the way they are intended.
We want you to continue sharing your ideas and discussing with your teams what this means to you, and how we all can be making every day matter. Once you’ve had that discussion, let us know your teams pledge to help make every day matter by filling in our new form below.
Think about what changes you can make in your working area to support safe patient flow through our hospitals.

Urgent, emergency and same day care
Evidence shows that delays in the emergency department (ED) negatively impact clinical outcomes: that’s why we must ensure that the time a patient waits between attending the ED and their onwards care or discharge should be no more than four hours.
We need all staff to engage with the improvement actions we are undertaking across all areas of the Trust. Including delivering and adhering to our internal professional standards and engaging with our board round programme. More on this below.

Internal professional standards
Our Internal Professional Standards help us make sure patients are in the right place at the right time as quickly as possible.
These standards are important in helping us to make sure patients are in the right place at the right time as quickly as possible and support our achievement of the four-hour target in ED.
If you don’t already have a copy of the standards, they are available to read on ourplace.

Board round improvement programme
Our new board round plan will help us improve the consistency and effectiveness of board rounds to ensure our patients are discharged as soon as they are medically fit.
- The three-week plan for each ward includes engaging, improving and then sustaining a board round, based on an established model of best practice recommended by our wards and ECIST.
- This model is set to be displayed in large posters across wards over the coming weeks.
Improvement work will continue to be rolled out to wards across all sites over the coming months.
